Pair of Balinese Carved Wooden Lubdaka Panels

Pair of Balinese Carved Wooden Lubdaka Panels

Rp 38.000.000Price

A remarkable pair of Balinese carved wooden panels depicting scenes inspired by the story of Lubdaka, a hunter whose spiritual journey forms the basis of the Hindu observance of Siwaratri. According to the Siwaratrikalpa, Lubdaka becomes stranded in the forest overnight and climbs a bila tree for safety. Unbeknownst to him, a Shiva Lingam lies beneath the tree, and the leaves he drops while keeping himself awake fall upon it, becoming an unintentional act of devotion to Lord Shiva. Lubdaka’s story carries profound spiritual symbolism, illustrating how sincere devotion, awareness, and spiritual awakening can emerge even from unintended acts. It is associated with repentance, forgiveness, the purification of past actions, and the possibility of liberation through divine grace.

The panels showcase the expressive artistry of traditional Balinese wood carving, with Lubdaka seated among the branches of a tree surrounded by intricately rendered foliage, flowers, and animal figures. Richly layered relief carving, detailed ornamental borders, and a vibrant palette of muted red, green, blue, pink, and ochre bring the narrative to life. Beyond their decorative appeal, the panels convey the enduring significance of Hindu mythology in Balinese culture, reflecting themes of spiritual transformation, the triumph of awareness over ignorance, and the path toward a deeper relationship with the divine.
