Mid-20th-Century East Javanese Bronze Nandi Sculpture
A finely modelled bronze sculpture depicting Nandi, the sacred bull and traditional mount (vahana) of Lord Shiva in Hindu tradition. Portrayed in a reclining posture with its head raised and legs folded beneath its body, the figure features decorative harness details, ornamental markings, and a sculpted headdress. Nandi symbolises strength, devotion, patience, and unwavering loyalty, serving as the divine guardian and companion of Shiva. Its presence is traditionally associated with protection and spiritual devotion.
Originating from East Java and dating to the mid-20th century, this sculpture reflects the enduring influence of Hindu artistic traditions in Indonesian metalwork. Its aged green-brown patina and detailed modelling give the piece a distinctive character, making it a meaningful example of Indonesian religious art and craftsmanship.
