Mangkunegaran Dragon-Shaped Betel Nut Container

Mangkunegaran Dragon-Shaped Betel Nut Container

Rp 9.000.000Price

An unusual dragon-shaped betel nut container originating from Pura Mangkunegaran, Surakarta, Central Java, dating to the early 20th century. Carved in the form of a mythical dragon-like creature, the piece features an elongated body, curled tail, ornamental wings, and a distinctive raised head. Its original red, black, and gold pigments remain visible across the surface, highlighting the intricate carving and expressive details. The dragon motif reflects the influence of mythical creatures in Javanese court art, where powerful animal forms often carried associations with protection, authority, and spiritual significance.

Traditionally, betel nut and betel leaf were offered and shared as part of important social, ceremonial, and courtly customs in Indonesia. Containers used to hold betel ingredients were therefore both functional objects and expressions of status and hospitality. This example combines that traditional purpose with elaborate Javanese decorative craftsmanship, offering a glimpse into the material culture of the Mangkunegaran court. Its aged painted surface and carved details preserve the character of an early 20th-century ceremonial object.
