Late 19th-Century Central Javanese Dragon-Shaped Lontar Holder
An elaborately carved wooden lontar holder originating from a Central Javanese palace, dating to the late 19th century. Designed to store and protect traditional palm-leaf manuscripts, the rectangular container features a fitted lid, intricate floral and geometric carvings along its sides, and sculptural dragon figures at either end. The dragon heads, with their raised trunks, ornamental detailing, and scaled bodies, lend the piece a distinctive mythical character. Traces of red, gold, and green pigments remain across its aged surface, reflecting its original decorative finish.
Lontar manuscripts played an important role in preserving Javanese literature, religious teachings, historical accounts, and traditional knowledge. Objects such as this were more than practical storage containers; their elaborate ornamentation reflected the cultural importance of the manuscripts they protected. The combination of mythical guardians, detailed carving, and traditional pigments makes this a distinctive example of Javanese court craftsmanship and decorative heritage.
