Handcrafted from dense, durable ironwood, this striking ancestral figure showcases intricate openwork carving framed by sweeping scrollwork and decorative motifs. The central figure is crowned with finely carved gecko forms, traditionally associated in various Indonesian and Bornean cultural traditions with protection, spiritual presence, and ancestral connections. Its elaborate composition and stylised features reflect the distinctive visual language of traditional Bornean woodcarving, particularly the ornamental carving traditions associated with Dayak communities.

Ironwood is valued for its exceptional strength, density, and resistance to moisture, making it a highly regarded material for traditional carving. Although its precise regional origin has not been confirmed, the figure’s motifs and carving style suggest a possible Bornean origin. With its substantial form, rich natural grain, and detailed openwork, this piece is a distinctive example of ancestral-inspired craftsmanship and the artistic heritage of Indonesia.
