Antique Javanese Terracotta Figure – Pare, East Java
An antique terracotta sculpture unearthed in Pare, East Java, featuring a finely modelled figure with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, an elongated nose, and a subtle smile. Its facial stylization reflects the distinctive East Javanese artistic tradition, often associated with proto-Wayang aesthetics found in temple reliefs from the Kediri period through the late Majapahit era. The figure is adorned with a crown and headdress structure (Mukuta / Jamang) and framed by a Prabhamandala, or decorative backing plate, traditionally symbolizing divine radiance and spiritual significance.
Although not recovered completely intact, the sculpture retains impressive details and its original terracotta character. Its stylistic features invite comparison with the relief carvings of Candi Surowono and Candi Tigowangi in the Pare region, offering a connection to East Java’s rich Hindu-Buddhist artistic and archaeological heritage.
