Antique Javanese Terracotta Boar-Shaped Celengan

Antique Javanese Terracotta Boar-Shaped Celengan

Rp 3.000.000Price

A distinctive terracotta sculpture in the form of a standing boar, inspired by the traditional Javanese celengan, or money box. Animal-shaped celengan were produced in Java, including during the Majapahit period, and served as containers for saving coins. Beyond their practical function, these objects evoke themes of prosperity, wealth, and good fortune, reflecting the enduring cultural value of saving and the hope for abundance.

The piece features a sturdy, rounded body, four short legs, and a lowered head with subtly defined facial details. A raised band resembling a chain encircles its neck, while the earthy surface, textured terracotta, and weathered finish lend it a strong sense of age and character. Its simple yet expressive form captures the appeal of traditional Indonesian folk art, bringing together functional design, cultural heritage, and symbolism associated with prosperity and good luck.
