Punakawan Teracotta Statues
This set of terracotta Panakawan statues was made especially for the Mangkunegaran palace in the 1950s.
In the Javanese wayang (puppet) world, the panakawan are the clown servants of the hero. In the stories, they are a cheerful group with their trademark sense of humour lightening the mood.
The panakawan’s role as clowns is to nurture, keep problems a secret, be good listeners, and benefit others.
Apart from that, each Punakawan has an individual personality and character traits, which you can explore through the wayang stories.
